About the Workshop

We know entrepreneurs think and dream big; and that is what makes them so unique. But, as you are dreaming up the next best idea, product or service, it is important to take a step back and to ensure that you build and secure the legal foundation of your business. Your lawyer will help you do this, but it is important to know the right questions to ask and to understand some key legal principles to spot potential issues and to resolve them early.

The goal of this workshop is twofold: (1) to ask and to answer some of the key questions every entrepreneur should ask his or her lawyer at the early stage of starting a business, and (2) to explain in plain English and to help you understand the key legal principles with which you should be familiar.

This workshop aims to cover the following questions and principles:
-How should I structure my business? What are the pros and cons of each structure?
-Are the people that work for me employees or contractors? Why does it matter?
-What is a shareholders agreement? How will it benefit me now and/or in the future?
-How do I protect my next best idea, product or service? How would intellectual property laws protect me?
-In this digital world, how do I stay onside various Canadian laws, like Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation (aka CASL) and the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (aka PIPEDA)?

About this Talk:

Richa started Good Food For Good as an answer to her calling. Who knew an event 15 years ago would have left her wanting to do something that matters for over a decade?

Richa will share with you how she discovered her calling and how her successful venture allows her to live her purpose everyday. Get an insider's look at this York University alumna's story plus the exclusive chance to ask Richa your question!

Speaker:

Richa Gupta, President & Founder, Good Food for Good

The pursuit of a dream to help consumers lead healthier lives, the company started with two questions: how to make healthy food taste great and how can it change the world? Good Food For Good was founded in 2013 by entrepreneur and mother Richa with a simple idea: making it easy for everyone to eat well and do good. With an MBA & over fifteen years of experience in retail, fashion and food marketing, after becoming a new mom working as a marketing executive, she constantly found it challenging to feed her family good food on busy nights. She grew frustrated with all the compromises she was expected to make for convenience. Driven to make a difference through food, she started Good Food For Good using only ingredients you would add if you were cooking yourself.

“I grew up in a family where my mum cooked fresh food, three times a day. So even just grabbing a pizza for dinner, as a working mom, I had so much guilt over not being able to cook healthy food for my kids. Anything that my mother did for me was the best that I wanted to do for my own child.”

Today, she is actively working on building better, healthier experiences for people with a goal to feed 1 Million.

About the Workshop

Start-ups face a unique insurance challenge. Do you prioritize your spending on revenue-generating activities? Or do you protect what you have built so far, by purchasing insurance? This conflict of priorities often results in companies going on without insurance for far too long, exposing years of hard work to legal liability and a wide variety of exposures to loss.

The Insurance for Start-Ups seminar aims to demystify the insurance purchase decision, highlight the critical types of coverage, and help you determine what (if any) insurances your business needs. Utilizing a case-based approach, attendees will enjoy practical takeaways that apply directly to their own business insurance concerns.
